Whyme Rhyme 2: Find the non-rhyming pairs of words that only differ in their first letter, such as LEMON DEMON.
Rules.
The words may or may not be proper nouns. Pronunciations are assumed to be standard American English, but these pairs will fail to rhyme in almost all dialects of English. (For more Whyme Rhymes, check out the archive.)
How to Play.
Simply type your guess in the box. Spaces and capitalization don't count, but spelling does! You can try as much as you want without penalty. If you have solved a puzzle already and want to see the original clue, try parking your mouse over the answer.

Ringer and Finger don't rhyme???
"Ringer and finger don't rhyme?"
No. It's hard without the phonetic alphabet, but if we represent the sound at the end of "thing" by [ng], then one word is pronounced "ri[ng]er" and the other has a hard G (as in Get) added: "fi[ng]Ger".
lynyrd skynyrd is a singer, not an actor
"Ringer and Finger don't rhyme??? "
Hmm, doesn't the quiz say "the non-rhyming pairs of words that only differ in their first letter"
Which is funny because Novel and Hovel rhyme (at least in UK English!!)
"Which is funny because Novel and Hovel rhyme (at least in UK English!!)"
Hm, that's interesting to find out. They don't rhyme in US English: the first syllable of Novel has an "ah" vowel, while Hovel has an "uh."
Novel and hovel rhyme perfectly well in US English. I've never said "huvel" I also think ringer and finger rhyme at least when said together. Separately you swallow the g more in ringer and pronounce it more in finger, but when you say them in a pair your brain pretty much makes it a rhyme.
Here are 2 more:
a) Bug mom
b) Lethargic rose
slower flower
a) Bother Muther
congrats!
Where the hell was Lynyrd Skynyrd when they were handing out vowels?
